This page shows the EDWARDS family
of Mattishall and how, through marriage connects with an EDWARDS
family of Suffolk who in turn has married into a NELSON family
also from, in this case Spaham, Norfolk although from records
they also owned quite a few properties in Mattishall and Mattishall
Burgh. Confussed, this page hopefully shows how it works.
The linage of this Mattishall EDWARDS
family is based on and down to John Edwards born 1877
who married Mabel Gay and their three children.
George Edwards, surgeon
of Eye gives the connection to the Nelson family in Norfolk,
for he married Frances Fisher Nelson in 1837. Through
one of their daughters Maria Nelson Edwards, born 1837
the connection to the Norfolk Edwards is made, for she married
Edward Edwards of Norfolk born in 1838, son of Edward Edwards
(1798) of Mattishall and Frances Bullard of Yaxham.

MORE on Maria Nelson
Edwards |
Maria was born in 1837 at Eye,
Suffolk, Maria appears to be the seventh child of
George Edwards a Surgeon and Frances Fisher
Nelson's 12 children. Frances Fisher Nelson
was born at Sparham, Norfolk. From newspaper achives
George died age 41 in 1843 leaving Frances a widow
with 11 young children with another on the way,
the oldest being only 13 and the two younger ones,
being twins, still in arms. George was held in the
highest esteem, when news of his sudden and melancholy
death was heard and that it had left his young family
in deep distress an appeal was set-up. Sir Edward
Karrison, Lord Bayning and Lord Henniker
acted as trustees. All their children carried Nelson
as their middle name.
After George's death Frances moved
to Mattishall Burgh where she lived in a property
thought to belong to her brother Thomas Nelson
although sadly the family had now been split up.
The twins had gone with her sister, only Thomas,
James and Henry were with her at the time of the
1851 census. Frances died in the January of 1861,
it is then after her death we find her son Frederick
had taken over the running of the house with Emily,
Maria, Louisa, and Henry recorded at the same address
on the census.

GEORGE EDWARDS
born about 1802
Son of unknown
|
George Edwards, Surgeon of Eye
gives the connection to the Nelson family in Norfolk as
he married Frances Fisher Nelson in 1837. Through
one of their daughters Maria Nelson Edwards, born
1837 the connection to the Norfolk Edwards is made, for
she married Edward Edwards born in 1838.

Maria Nelson Edwards daughter of George Edwards
and Frances Fisher Nelson
Born just before official records
began
Maria's father George
Edwards
From information gathered to-date George is no relation
to the above Edwards family, in the 1841 census he claims
he was born in 1802 in the county of Suffolk, although
no birth or baptism record has been found. His parents
would have been of financial means to pay for his schooling
and mendical training. How he got to know Frances is still
unknown as Eye is some 40 miles from Sparham, so maybe
there was some kind of link.

Journal -
A CASE OF DEEP DISTRESS. The sudden
and melancholy death of Mr GEORGE EDWARDS, Surgeon
of Eye has called forth in behalf of his family, the deepest
sympathy for all who knew him.
It has been suggested by the Friends of the Widow of the
late lamented Mr Edwards, that the distressing, circumstances
in which the bereaved Mother and eleven children are left,
constitute a ground for a powerful appeal to every christian
and benevolent heart for assistance. The two youngest
Children are twins still in arms, and the eldest is only
13 years of age and an increase of the family is shortly
expected. It is painful to state that the demands upon
the property of the deceased, will leave no balance whatever
for the future support (to say nothing of the Education)
of this numerous and distressed family. Confiding therefore
in HIM, who is "the Father of the Fatherless, and
the Judge of the Widow,"this address is presented
to the benevolent, believing that GOD will dispose them
to extend their liberality to this much respected and
truly afflicted family, now deprived of the means of subsistence,
and mourning the loss of a most affectionate, Husband
and Parent.
Sir Edward Kerrisou, Lord Bayning, and Lord Henniker,
have kindly consented to act as Trustees of the Fund,
and have opened an account in their joint names at the
East of England Bank, at Eye, Suffolk, where any subscriptions,
which may be kindly made, may he paid to their credit.
Eye 21st January, 1843 - There then
follows a very long list of the funds already received
together with the donors.
In 1851 George's widow
(Frances) had moved to Mattishall Burgh, Norfolk and apparently
living in a property belonging her brother which is more
likely to have been Thomas Nelson as her was exector
of her estate.

MORE
on Maria Nelson Edward’s mother
Frances Fisher NELSON was baptised on Dec 6th 1802 at Sparham
the daughter of James NELSON and Ann Fisher. |
Maria'a Grandfather (James Nelson)
would have been born about the year 1760. This is about
the same time as the birth of Lord
Horatio Nelson (<link) at Burnham Market, Norfolk
in 1758. The name Nelson is an old Norfolk family name
although Horatio's father (Edmund) was said to have been
born at Cambridge in 1722, and the following year baptised
at East Bradenham, Norfolk. Todate there is nothing to
show a connection with the families. In James's marriage
record to Ann Fisher in 1788 it states he was from
Bawdeswell. At this time only one record fits the bill,
it shows a James Nelson bapised on December 25,
1760 at St Mary’s Church Barney the son of Nicholas
Nelson and his wife Mary (could be Bircham - see below).
Barney is actually only 12 miles from Bawdeswell so this
cannot be ruled out.

Nelson to Ann Fisher and the 8 children so
